How to reduce MTTR in industrial maintenance: methods and levers

A good MTTR doesn’t guarantee good maintenance, but a bad MTTR guarantees poor industrial performance. When a piece of equipment breaks down, every minute of downtime is costly. The real lever to reduce MTTR isn’t to intervene faster, but to understand faster.

What is MTTR?

The MTTR (Mean Time To Repair) is the average time needed to repair a piece of equipment and bring it back into service. It covers four times:

Why is MTTR too high?

1. Improve fault diagnosis

This is the main lever: structure symptoms, guide the identification of probable causes, rely on similar cases. Fewer trials, fewer errors, faster intervention.

2. Standardize interventions

Clear procedures, checklists and operating sheets reduce variability between technicians.

3. Capture field feedback (lessons learned)

Document each intervention, link cause → action → result, reuse effective solutions. Without capitalization, the same mistakes get repeated.

4. Improve access to information

Structured history, documentation accessible in the field, data usable in real time.

5. Prioritize interventions better

Not all MTTRs are equal: high on secondary equipment is acceptable; high on a vital function is a major risk. MTTR reduction must be steered by operational impact.

MTTR and MTBF: a balance to master

Reducing MTTR is essential, but not enough. A fast but botched repair causes recurring breakdowns and lowers the MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures). The goal isn’t only to repair fast, but to repair fast and correctly.
